Spy Dog Author Tells Tales at York House...

Author Andy Cope with his Spy Dog called Star

Children’s author Andy Cope came to York House School and brought a very special friend with him! Star the dog accompanied Andy as he spoke to the Juniors about his journey as an author. The idea of a Spy Dog came to him one night whilst watching the mercurial James Bond with Star's mother, Lara fast asleep in front of the fire and one ear stood up listening whilst she lay sleeping...

What was she listening for? Who knows but there and then the seed of an idea formed and grew and changed Andy's life forever as he quickly wrote the first of many of his books in the series.

A very humorous and thought-provoking talk was given by Andy (and Star!) and a challenge was set... Each pupil had to return to class and in 45 minutes write a story about their very own Spy Gorilla! The best ones were selected to be read out later in the hall by their author and Andy chose a winner of the best six entries. Congratulations to Tim Hire on winning your very exclusive red Spy Dog t-shirt.

In typical York House fashion, the standard was highly impressive from each year, and the gathered parents enjoyed hearing and seeing the stories being read out for the time ever!

Andy has a wonderful and positive outlook on life, based on watching less television and reading and more, and the children drew great inspiration from it. Andy only allows himself to watch three programmes a week, so that he can think and write.
The three words of advice to follow in life he gave were:

1. Read  2. Read  3. Read

Simple really…! Thank you Andy for spending so long signing books and being a wonderful and inspiring speaker - your books will always be treasured in our Library...
