Welcome to
Middle School

Our Middle School is for children Year 5 and Year 6.

In Middle School children in Year 5 and Year 6 embark on a transformative journey.

Guided by our pupil aims—’Positive Outlook, Self-Reliance, and Leaving People and Places Better than we find them’—students develop character and resilience, earning badges each term as they embody these values. Our Middle School is dedicated to fostering well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges of future education.

With a focus on academic excellence and a rich array of opportunities in Sports, Music, and the Arts, we nurture each child’s unique talents and interests. At York House, every student is encouraged to reach their full potential, supported by a caring community of teachers and peers. We inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning in every child who walks through our doors.

Overview

In the Middle School, we are dedicated to preparing children for success both collaboratively and independently.

We equip them with a toolkit of learning strategies, fostering a growth mindset and progressive thinking in every task they undertake. Through teamwork and leadership opportunities, students learn to express themselves confidently while maintaining a positive outlook in all endeavours.

Our commitment to holistic development extends beyond the classroom through residential trips. In Year 5, students embark on a three-day, two-night adventure with the Bushcraft Company, learning essential outdoor survival skills like shelter building and emergency first aid. In Year 6, they spend a week at an activity centre in the UK, further cultivating resilience, self-reliance, self-esteem, and leadership qualities. These experiences instil lifelong lessons and memories, shaping well-rounded individuals ready to embrace the challenges of the future.

Academic

In the Middle School we pride ourselves on offering a comprehensive curriculum that nurtures every aspect of a child’s development. In addition to core subjects like ICT, Science, and Mathematics, our curriculum encompasses a rich tapestry of disciplines including Drama, History, Geography, TPR, STEM, French, Art, Outdoor Learning, and Music.

With a focus on personalised learning, students are streamed in Year 5 and Year 6 for Mathematics and other subjects in Year 6, ensuring each child’s unique needs are met. Our Exceptional Performers initiative celebrates students who excel across various domains, from Academics and IT to Art, Sports, Outdoor Learning, and Music. Additionally, our dedicated SEND team provides individual and group support for children with additional needs.

Through our sports curriculum, students engage in a diverse range of fixtures, fostering growth and progression in a graded team environment. Homework assignments in Mathematics, English, Science, and Reasoning are set weekly, reinforcing classroom learning and promoting independent study habits.

Pastoral Care

Throughout the Middle School, we believe in nurturing empathetic and emotionally intelligent students through the RULER approach, integrated seamlessly with the York House Way ethos. This approach fosters a deep understanding of emotions, empowering students to recognise, express, and regulate their feelings effectively. By equipping them with these vital skills from a young age, we empower our students to navigate various situations with confidence and resilience.

Central to our philosophy is the recognition that mental health and overall well-being are fundamental to a student’s success and happiness. Our holistic approach encompasses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions, ensuring that every aspect of a student’s well-being is valued and supported.

With a dedicated pastoral team committed to the welfare of our students and staff, we prioritise creating a safe and positive learning environment. Through robust systems and support networks, we strive to meet the diverse needs of our school community, fostering an atmosphere where every individual can thrive.

Co-Curricular

In Middle School, our commitment to holistic education extends beyond the classroom.

Through our diverse co-curricular program, students have the opportunity to explore passions and develop skills in activities such as archery, kayaking, photography, golf, LAMDA, Warhammer and chess. These clubs not only enhance academic performance but also foster confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

We understand the demands of modern family life, which is why our wrap-around care program offers flexible options to support families beyond standard school hours. From breakfast clubs starting at 07:30 to After School Club (ASC) until 18:00, and bookable ‘Tea’ for later pickups, we ensure continuous care in a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Our dedicated staff are committed to making every moment enriching and enjoyable, providing peace of mind for parents and a fulfilling experience for each child. At York House, we believe in empowering students to explore their interests and talents, both in and out of the classroom, fostering personal growth and well-rounded development.

Outdoor Learning

Whether seeking a peaceful moment alone or a quiet conversation with friends, our outdoor spaces offer sanctuary.

Through our Outdoor Learning lessons, we focus on the children’s holistic development, recognising the crucial role outdoor education plays in nurturing well-being. Through a diverse range of activities like mountain biking, shelter building, campouts, and lake fishing, students not only engage in thrilling adventures but also find respite from the rigours of academic life. These experiences serve as powerful tools for stress relief, allowing students to unwind and recharge amidst the beauty of nature.

Our natural surroundings provide an ideal setting for mindfulness, offering tranquillity and solitude for reflection. By fostering a connection with the environment, we empower students to prioritise their mental health and cultivate a balanced approach to life. At York House, outdoor education is not just an extracurricular activity; it’s an integral part of our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals.
