York House

At York House School, we aim to ensure every child can fulfil their academic potential.

We broadly follow the Early Years Foundation Stage in Nursery and Reception, the National Curriculum from Y1 to Y6, and the ISEB 13+ Common Entrance Curriculum in Y7 and Y8.

We have taken advantage of the freedom offered to us as an Independent School to design an engaging curriculum that fits the ethos of our school and meets the needs of our pupils.

The majority of our pupils are working far beyond age-related expectations. Learning opportunities are enriched with our expert teaching ensuring that pupils not only make outstanding progress but also develop a love of learning.

Learning is not confined to sitting behind a desk either. It often extends beyond the classroom walls altogether, making the most of our wonderful setting and exciting Outdoor Learning facilities, as well as an array of educational visits and trips each year.

We carefully track and monitor the progress of every child, ensuring that we provide additional support for those pupils who require it through outstanding day-to-day Learning Support. At the same time, we ensure we offer stretch and challenge to those pupils excelling in their subject areas, supported by our Exceptional Performance programme which covers: Academic, Sports, Art, Music, Outdoor Learning, Computing and Drama.

We pride ourselves on the breadth of subjects we offer all our pupils, regardless of age. In the Pre-Prep, pupils have weekly lessons in French, Swimming, PE, Games, Drama, Computing and Music, all taught by specialist teachers. In addition to this, as pupils progress through the school, they will also have discreet curriculum lessons in Outdoor Learning, Latin and Trivium, which embraces 21st Century Skills like research, critical thinking and public speaking.

In line with ‘The York House Way’, pupils also develop the habits they need to thrive as independent learners. Growth Mindset attitudes, collaboration, metacognition and public speaking are all embedded within our curriculum.

ICT and Computing skills taught within curriculum lessons enhance learning. Technology such as iPads, Chromebooks, Interactive Whiteboards, eLearning Platforms, and other educational software enhance learning throughout the school as well as at home, ensuring our pupils are confident and competent users of technology.

For all the variety on offer, pupil progression in the academic subjects is always paramount. We have a firm commitment to ensuring that every child fulfils their academic potential, and this guides us at all times.

Regular tracking of academic progress helps to ensure that by the time they leave York House, well prepared for their move to Senior Schools, all pupils have had the chance to fulfil their academic potential.
